Fashion post – for the guys!

Hey everyone :D
Today a rather funny incident occurred in class which led to one of my readers advising me to do a fashion post for the males – so here we are – shout out to him! J

His request was along the lines of appropriate cooperate dressing for guys so I got a few guys in my class to take part in a quick photo shoot session between lectures - so let’s get right down to it!

1)   Classic
Here we have an example of the absolutely easiest to achieve cooperate style: a plain white shirt, coupled with a mildly patterned tie. Play safe by combining it with a black belt, black trousers and black shoes. It’s practically a no-brainer; minimal effort but you’ll look the part.

2)   Pinstripes
Slight upgrade from classic, as it requires a hint more of thought processing to put together. In the example above, you see that though the pinstripes are rather faint, they are within the color scheme of the shirt, which makes accessorizing it simpler. The black satin tie is fastened by a silver tie clip, which harmoniously rhymes with his black belt and silver buckle. If you want, you can go the extra mile and match your wristwatch to your ongoing theme, everyone likes extra points :D

3)   Pop color
Here we have something similar to Classic, but instead of the plain canvas white shirt, you can insert a bright colored shirt. In the example, the model has paired his pink shirt with a uniquely patterned tie, albeit dull colored. The dull coloring of the tie is important as the shirt’s color in itself is an attractant, so combining a bright shirt and a bright tie would create a fight for attention between the two – nobody wants to be that guy.

4)   Statement Tie
Last but not the least, is an example of when the tie is the leading factor of the outfit. This styling generally requires much more effort, but with practice becomes second nature. As seen on the model, a crisp, plain white shirt has been paired with a beautifully decorated tie. The core color of the tie, black, has been matched with the belt on his waist and the strap of his wristwatch; while the chino-brown patterns on the tie were delicately played upon by matching them with both his trousers and the face of his wristwatch.

I hope this blogpost has been helpful, thank you once more to my lovely classmates turned models who let me put up their cooperate style :D

Feel free to comment your own ideas :D

Inspiration.

Hello hello!

Some of you lovely readers may know that I’m studying to be a medical doctor. Now, if there’s anything you need to have even an iota of motivation to go through with this course, or anything in life - it’s inspiration.

Inspiration is what makes up the bedrock of why you do something; why you aspire to be someone and what you remind yourself of when the going gets tough.

Inspiration births motivation.

So as not to always write abstractly and to ensure my point is put across adequately, let me give an example of how I got my inspiration to go through with this challenging course. My father has been a doctor long before I was born and during my early childhood he specialized in pediatrics, which is the care of children. I was an asthmatic patient at the time and sometimes I had episodes that pushed me over to the brink of life; but each time he combatted it and drew me back into safety. I grew to admire him for the numerous life and death scenarios he battled both at home and at work, being faced with such circumstances on a regular basis is enough to break a person down, but he always pushed through.

What led me to remember this was my first up-close labor room experience; I was the very first person that my patient’s child saw in it’s life, and although the process to deliver the child was no simple task, that brief moment, when I locked eyes with the child, was magical. I was re-inspired.

So this post is all about inspiring you to get inspiration; it keeps the passion burning for whatever it is you’ve set your mind to do.

Best of Luck xo

SOCIAL MEDIA.

Twitter, Instagram,, Tumblr (for the really cool folks), Facebook (because let’s be honest, it’s still useful for filling forms online, choosing “Log in with facebook” saves so much time!).

All these platforms, and much more, make up the powerhouses of “social media”. A place where people share their views on topics that can vary from debating about eating rice with a spoon or a fork right up to pressing current issues like Xenophobia in South Africa or the #BlackLivesMatter movement in America.

Social media is now a dependent source of breaking news; I remember the times when we had to wait for a reporter to get to the scene of a crisis before the news got out. Now, we get video coverage from passer-byers who upload the content to news outlets, some even happily report live from the scene, all with their ever so handy smart phones or tablet devices.

Clearly social media has had a positive effect on society and has proved its usefulness thus far. However, just like any coin, there is a reverse effect that social media has on society too. Since it’s advent, there has been an increase in the need to please or gain approval from absolute strangers. There has been a rise in identity loss among youths, as several young people now gauge their self-worth from the number of ‘likes’ or followers they have.

TAKE A STEP BACK.

There’s more to life than likes and follows, don’t degrade yourself for people who don’t give a hoot about your life. Some girls have apps on their phones that clears their skin, cinches their waist, expands their hip width – amongst many other aesthetic alterations, then they post the picture on twitter and get loads of Retweets and Favourites. Should you then compare yourself to that person’s caricature and feel low? God forbid!

Use social media to positively affect your life and leave it at that – you’ll be a much more happier person :)

Morals

I believe in this. This is what I stand for and thus this is what makes me – ME. Nutshell definition of the term:  Moral.

Why they are so important is simply because a person without morals can be swayed by whatever breeze blows by; they stand for nothing so they can fall for anything. Morals keep you grounded and help define how you live your life.

Morals are the difference between a good person and a bad person.

Morals define a person; it’s your morals that speak as your conscience when making decisions, big or small. I won’t sit here and tell you which morals to have but I will say that you should have morals.

New Beginnings

This is an open letter addressed to my family, friends and fans (I’ve been told it’s time I accept that I have “fans”). Ever since I started at university in Nigeria back in 2012 I’ve made quite a name for myself, simply by being myself. I joined sports teams, joined the choir, got involved with Student politics; amidst several other extra-curricular activities, and still managed to maintain a healthy academic life. I was just ‘doing me’ so I didn’t realize when people started to watch me or imitate me like my hairstyles - which I found to be very flattering, I must say.

After a short while, I began planning events and hosting shows, which was so much fun! Every show was a challenge, most especially ABUAD Top Model Season 1 – I was hosting alongside the effervescent Denrele Edun himself!

I thoroughly enjoyed myself during these opportunities, and I thank every single organiser who has ever invited me to host or plan an event at this school, including the University’s Founder, who allowed me to be the first student co-host of the founder’s dinner during the 2014 convocation ceremonies, which had very highly decorated guests from all around the world.

Now that it’s the Nigerian university awards season, it became clearer to see that people had noticed me on campus; in one year alone I’ve received:
·      Campus Heat Awards Nomination for ‘Most Knowledgeable Student (female)’ (ABUAD) Award
·      Prodigie Image Recognition Awards Nomination for “Most Influential Student” (ABUAD) Award
·      Prodigie Image Recognition Awards Nomination for “Take Home to Mama” (ABUAD) Award

I’m thoroughly humbled by the recognition; it goes to show that people notice you even if they don’t tell you so.

Now, to the main reason why I’ve written this blogpost: for reasons best left undisclosed, I have decided to leave ABUAD. Over the last few weeks I have faced trials that I cannot explain, and I feel it will shadow the remaining years of my stay in the institution, which would hinder my ability to flourish.

My choice to leave the university does not mean I am cutting ties with the wonderful people I’ve met there; there are friendships that last a lifetime, I’m grateful to be able to say I’ve made such friendships whilst I was at the school. From the short, summarized biography of my stay in ABUAD above, it is obvious that I gained a lot as an entire person whilst there, so I cannot say I regret coming to the school based on a few weeks of negativity in comparison to years of positivity.

I believe everything happens for a reason. This chapter may be closing, but another one has opened simultaneously.

On to the next challenge.
