It's My One Year Anniversary!

It's actually been a whole year since I started blogging.

Wow.

This post is really just a vote of thanks to everyone who has ever visited my blog, commented and shared it; I'm so grateful.

If you started from the beginning you'd see that what birthed Modesty Is The Mantra was pure, unadulterated pain. I was very hurt and I decided to write to vent my emotions on a whim - unknown to me that many other people could relate to my exact feelings; and so I continued writing. I'm glad I can say that test transformed into a testimony, one which I am very proud of.

One post a week for 52 weeks; who would have thought I'd be able to keep this up whilst in med school? :D

So, as we forge into the second year of this blog, feel free to send me critique - I love to learn and grow!

Once again, thank you for always coming back, I'm very, very grateful.

Adios! Xo

Arguments.

Arguments. Definitely not something I enjoy partaking in, or even watching to be honest. I feel like arguments have such a strong negative vibe and they tend to bring out the worst in people. Arguments can make people say or do things that, when in their normal state of mind, they would be ashamed to do.

But then, arguments do have their positive sides. You must be thinking, say what? What I mean is that although they have strong negative connotations, they can also bring out some good. For example, if you argue with someone you care about, you get fueled to say your mind concerning the issue at hand, as well as anything else that has been bothering your mind - that you had been trying to suppress - and let's be honest, suppressed displeasures don't just disappear. So that argument will give you and the other person a chance to iron out all issues - possibly making for a better relationship, if handled well.

My favorite book has this quote - "If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men", which to me clarifies that a disagreement between people is a physiological process; it's part of life. Otherwise the very important clauses - "if it is possible, as long as it depends on you" - wouldn't have been inserted!

The memo here is to try your best to live at peace with everyone, it makes for  a simpler, peaceful life.

Respect.

“Respect is reciprocal”, is a saying my father regularly echoed in the corridors of our family home as we grew up. When I started learning about reciprocals in math classes it re-echoed - as I’m an associative learner.  By the way, I’d advise that you find out what type of learner you are, it goes a long way; far beyond exam success.

Back to respect. It should never be demanded for; respect is earned. Portray yourself as someone you would respect and treat others how you would like to be treated.

Here’s an atypical situation: One time I was at a bus stop and an elderly white man started hurling racist, abusive language in my direction – for no apparent reason. For the sole reason that he was old and I assumed he was borderline senile I chose to hold my peace, but those factors aside, did he deserve to be respected?

Sometimes we just respect others out of the respect we have for ourselves. It’s not the most fun thing to do but it is necessary in some circumstances; like how a house officer has to respect a senior registrar and they both have to respect a consultant – it’s how the world goes round. Someday the house officer would become a consultant and he’d want to be respected too; so he gives respect to whom it is due.

Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you want others to do unto you”.

It’s that simple.

Appearance.

No, this isn’t a fashion post…this is something for your mind to ruminate upon.

“Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” must be the world’s most over used idiom, yet the same people who say it - as well as those who don’t – are the ones assigning themselves the position of Justice where none is necessary. Because someone looks a certain way it doesn’t always mean they are just as they appear.

Here’s a scenario, you’re positioned at a distance and you see a young black male wearing a black bomber jacket, black tracksuit bottoms, all-black Nike trainers and a black head warmer approach a frail looking old woman across the street. You hurry towards the seemingly about-to-be emergency situation only to see him assist the elderly woman with her bags, all the while engaging in friendly conversation with her.

How do you feel? Your conception was absolutely wrong and you’ve wasted your time and energy all because of an unnecessary judgment. You could have gotten a chocolate in that time or something haha.

On a serious note; take a minute to think before you pass judgments, even the mental ones.

Purpose

You’re breathing regularly and your heart is pumping blood into both your pulmonary and systemic circulation = you are alive.

Well done on passing the first stage of affirming your existence on this great planet we call Earth. Now that you have come to stage two, you realize that you have people that acknowledge your presence on the planet; be it your parents, siblings, friends or even just the guy that lives across the road from you that you don’t actually talk to. All these people know you exist.

Welcome to stage three, where you assess your impact circumference. So far you have confirmed that truly, you do exist, but now at this stage, you assess whether your existence has any empirical value on others. Is there someone that has imitated something about you, be it positive or negative? Or is there someone who takes your input into his or her life as really important?

No matter what stage you are at, I want you to take a moment to really think, why do you exist? What is the point of the piece of matter that is you?

To be honest, this is actually a rather big question; one which I’d suggest you present to God, like Paul did in Acts 9:6 and say, “Lord what will you have me do?” because frankly He’s the only person that can tell you exactly why you are here – He did make and place you where you are after all.

The Big Guy Upstairs is ready to tell you – but are you ready to ask?
